Executive Summary

Project purpose

The project subject is handling the risks of adverse effects to human health and the environment by transboundary movements of waste.

The purpose of the project is to derive XML Schema based on existing Core Components and Business Information Entities for many of the information exchanges laid down by the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Waste and their Disposal. It is competent authorities, exporters of waste, importers of waste and recovery or disposal facilities which are involved in these information exchanges. The Basel Convention has been adopted on 22 March 1989. As of early 2013, 180 countries are party to the convention.

Project scope

The project is based on the Transboundary Movements of Waste project of TBG13 Environmental Management submitted in 2008. The deliverables of the 2008 project are a Business Requirements Specification, Core Components and Business Information Entities, which have been approved and published by UN/CEFACT in 2009. The D09B release of the Core Component Library was the first to contain the Transboundary Movements of Waste related Core Components and Business Information Entities.

The scope of the new project is the development and standardisation of XML Schema Definitions which complement the original deliverables from 2008.
