Global Trust Registry

This is the live project page for the UN/CEFACT Global Trust Registry (GTR) Project. Here you'll find the project calendar, deliverables, meeting minutes etc. for the project.

The GTR project is focused on supporting trade and commerce by recommending how existing authoritative directories managed by UN nations states can be verified and recommend how they can make their registry contents accessible and verifiable for all supply chain participants.

The project is interested in authoritative registries of things that are important to supply chain trust and transparency. This includes:

  • Business registers (to prove business / company authority)
  • Land registers (to prove property rights)
  • Facility Registers (to prove registration of facilities)
  • Product registers (to prove ownership, registration and, sometimes, compliance of a product
  • Trademark registers (to prove ownership of the brand)
  • Asset registers (to prove ownership of the ship, vehicle, or other equipment)

This focus, and the guidelines within which the project operates, means that there are a few things that the project will do, and will not do:

The project:

  • Will seek to recognise the government registries that exist, understand their legal and governance framework, what they issue, and if and how they make that digitally accessible and verifiable
  • Will propose a governance framework for the UN CEFACT registry recognition process
  • Will seek to define a data model and verification process for registry identifiers that enables trustworthiness and interoperability
  • Will develop implementation pilots and guidance
  • Will guidanceWill support key SDGs, including SDG 9 Innovation and resilient infrastructure, SDG 12:  Supply chain transparency and SDG 16 : Peace, justice and strong institutions.
  • Will not seek to create [yet another] central registry of all things
  • Will not issue secondary credentials nor issue credentials on behalf of registries
  • Will not disrupt existing business models of nation state registries
  • Will not dictate to nation states what they do, nor how they should do it

Note that while the project name is the UN/CEFACT Global Trust Registry Project, the system recommended by the project may have another name.

A logical model of the area of focus for thr project is show below. In this model there are four "jurisdictions" across which supply chain participants are organised. Each jurisdiction has one or more authoritative registries of participants and other supply chain assets. In the model being investigated by this project, these nation state authoritative registries may choose to register with the UN/CEFACT registry directory. This will mean that supply chain participants can check to see if their suppliers/customers are registered with authoritative registries in the relevant nation state. Further, this project will seek to recommend how these participants might use verifiable credentials to prove that they have been registered with authoritative registries so that their claims can be anchored (and verified).

This logical model can be further annotated as shown below to highlight the key deliverables of the project.
