Project Scope
This project aims to bring together the main actors involved in th=
e textile and leather sector, including key players from the world of inter=
national, governments, private sector associations, NGOs and Accademia. Tex=
tile and leather in the context of this project is intended to cover all ga=
rment and footwear-related operation. It also covers all animal biproducts =
(including leather) and all plant biproducts. A framework to design traceab=
ility for sustainable trade has already been developed by the UNECE Trade F=
acilitation Section secretariat; this project will build upon this model an=
d provide much needed guidance and tools to the garment and footwear sector=
on how best to apply these principles to the specific nature of their indu=
stry. This global framework will give specific attention to tackling negati=
ve health, social and environmental impacts of garment and footwear-related=
operations. UN/CEFACT has developed electronic standards on Animal traceab=
ility, plant traceability and their bi-products as well as eCrop data excha=
nge. These base data exchange standards are useful within the textile and l=
eather industry but require slight adjustments in order to fully meet their=
specific requirements, and to capture sustainability performance. The proj=
ect will therefore create the specific BRS, CCBDA and XML message schemas f=
or the garment and footwear sector. The Business to Business processes and =
the Business to Government processes will be considered in the national and=
global trans-border operations. Based on the UN/CEFACT Buy-Ship-Pay model,=
all stages of product life cycle will be considered, including farming/cul=
tivation, processing, transport/logistics and retail, and will attempt to e=
xtend to the use, reuse and recycle stages, in connection with the circular=
economy approach. The project will further aim to contribute to the UN Sus=
tainable Development Agenda 2030, specifically on SDG12, which calls on res=
ponsible consumption and production patters, as well as SDG8 on inclusive g=
rowth, and SDG 17 on rules based international trading system.
